Hyderabad: International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines on Saturday signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU) for taking up collaborative research projects on rice crop in Telangana. According to a press release, the IRRI will also organise capacity building programmes to the faculty of PJTSAU on advanced breeding technologies and Mutual Student, Faculty exchange program. The team of scientists from IRRI led by its director general Dr Mathew Morrell and the university Vice Chancellor, Dr V Praveen Rao, signed the pact. Both the institutes will initiate collaborative research projects in developing the new rice varieties for resistance to salinity, drought tolerance, pest and disease. Market demand rice varieties like low glysemic index which more commonly are preferred by diabetic patients will be developed, The IRRI and PJTSAU will prepare the action plan for rice varieties in view of the large scale irrigation projects in the Telangana and also work on water use efficiency in rice crop with thrust on khariff rice varieties.
