Kothagudem: The police on Tuesday arrested the CPI (ML) New Democracy (ND) State committee (underground) member Dhanasari Sammaiah alias Gopanna. The Superintendent of Police, Sunil Dutt, told the media that Gopanna was taken into custody in the forests of Raigudem in Yellandu mandal in Bhadradri Kothagudem by a police team led by Mahabubabad DSP A Naresh Naik. Gopanna, a native of Enchagudem of Kothaguda mandal of Mahabubabad district, was involved in 13 criminal cases under the limits of different police stations. He escaped after firing at the police on July 31 in the forests of Rollagadda and Devalagudem of Gundala mandal in the district, the SP said. He said following complaints that the CPI (ML) ND Linganna dalam was camping in Gundala to extort money from contractors and traders and instigate people on podu lands issue, police took up search operations in the Rollagadda forests. In the exchange of fire, Linganna died and Gopanna escaped. The SP further said that the New Democracy Yellandu town secretary T Nageswar Rao was recently arrested and Rs 6 lakh, which he extorted from tendu leaf contractors, recovered from him. The ND underground cadre has been creating law and order problems, threatening common people, politicians and officials when they did not accede to their demands.
